Been loyal subscriber to Sunset for many years. Your integrity just slipped as I too read that we just visit the website to enter to win. Now here, you have sold out to the facebook advertising and over-junked websites. I choose not to ‘like’ it. disappointed in you….

People are bonkers. Your magazine is changing with the times. Get over it people. Your magazine is doing a contest utilizing social media. Get over it people. This is a time of giving, your magazine doesn’t have to give ANYTHING away, but you are. Instead people go on here & spend their time complaining about FB being a waste of time and they don’t want to be “forced” into it by Sunset?! Get over it people.

Wow- so many people wondering what happened to the Sunset we have been reading all these years!! I read the ones at my grandmothers house 60 years ago – now it’s hard to tell it from all the other flashy stuff we are told we must have. Faceook and Twitter just won’t do!

Sunset has been part of the family for decades but I have to agree with the majority of folks that got sucked in to this page, and ended up being disappointed by the “Like” me approach. I appreciate the marketing attempt to a crowd that has the desire to be twittered but don’t forget the demographics of your long time audience?

  22. Lost again!

Was really looking forward to winning something, like that cool hot tub. I have no time for twitter or facebook. As a single parent to a special needs child who has time. I had a minute thinking I could try to win something. But bummed I can’t. Maybe Sunset should blog like Ree Drummond. She doesn’t ask you to tweet, or go on facebook to win stuff. You actually go on her blog and win.

  23. Christin Anderson

I have been a subscriber for a long time and now days I feel left out of the story in sunset. I looks very techie and Gen. X. I don’t do Facebook or Twitter. They are big time sucks . I would rather be making things, having fun outside and living my dream not everyone else’s life on FAcebook. The hot tub prize what a scam!

It has been apparent for some while that Sunset is trying to reach out to a new demographic. That is understandable: the magazine is a business and must survive. But I am among your many long-time (25+ years) subscribers who is not into liking on Facebook and won’t use Twitter. You are pushing many of us away – maybe you need to rethink your marketing campaign?

    December 2, 2014 at 6:24 pm
  26. Carol Shih

@Way Chen: We are actually not requiring any of that to enter. If you look at our Facebook post from today, we asked people to tell us what their next big adventure will be. No tricks.

    December 2, 2014 at 5:09 pm
  27. Way Chen

“No purchase necessary” – just give your id, personal info, friends list, instead! That is SOOO wrong, Sunset!

Sunset Magazine use to be a favorite. I’m sorry to say this type of silliness, bait and switch, turns me off. The pictures in the magazine have become dull and a bit lfeless – except for – Rugged Beauties – this months 100 fresh holiday ideas was a disappointment. This is not really a complaint, it’s truly meant as a small wake up call from a subscriber who was loyal for years. For Southern California you mention turning over the trays on plants so they don’t hold water…really? Are you aware of the drought? Comeon! You can do much better!

    December 1, 2014 at 4:53 pm
  30. Beth Harbourt

WHILE Sunset is my all time favorite magazine this contest seems awfully unlike the Sunset I have known these past 40 years.

    December 1, 2014 at 3:50 pm
  31. Kathy Myers

This is disappointing. And it truly doesn’t seem like the “Sunset” approach…but your publication seems to be changing in many ways, some not for the better. I am still buckling to the system and entering the contest, but I don’t feel so good about Sunset right now.

  33. Joe Mendez

This contest borders on false advertising. “For a chance to win some of the gifts in this story, go to sunset.com/holidaygiveway.” Doesn’t say anything about Facebook or Twitter. Come on Sunset, lets be up-front with your contests. I imagine that most people would like to win the Hot Tub, however your description says “some of the gifts”. Is the hot tub even included in the give-away?

    November 30, 2014 at 3:22 pm
  34. Tracey

I would love to sign up but I don’t do facebook, twitter or the rest because of personal and security issues. Would love to sign up to win but looks like I am out of luck. Will consider this in the future when subscription comes in to renew, you need to make it open to all!

    November 30, 2014 at 1:29 pm
  35. Julie

Would love the hot tub for our cabin. Refuse to add useless Likes – how will that increase subscription rates? and hate Twitter. Disappointed.

    November 29, 2014 at 1:46 pm
  36. Dawn McCabe

This hot tub would be perfect for our annual family camping trip to Lake Pend Orielle!

    Would love the hot tub!

    November 29, 2014 at 8:46 am

  47. Debra

I agree that the rules said nothing about having to go onto Facebook or twitter,,,i don’t want to join either. should be a way for me to enter this contest

    November 28, 2014 at 8:36 am
  48. Jocelynn

No way, I have been a subscriber for years and years but have stopped my subscription because everything is now focused towards the social media demographic. I still get the magazine because of an organization membership I have that sends it free. Each time I feel the old excitement of opening it but find something disappointing. This time it is the discriminatory contest. I have never bothered to send in my feelings before, other than by canceling my subscription, but this time I really feel manipulated. What a waste of my time.

    November 26, 2014 at 4:29 pm
  49. Mary Ann

I don’t “Like” pages either, nor do I use Twitter. The magazine said to come to this site to enter and said nothing about Facebook.

    November 26, 2014 at 12:43 pm
  50. Bridget

If you’re capable of commenting on here, you’re capable for using facebook or Twitter to sign up for the sweepstakes. If you don’t want to sign up for facebook or Twitter, then don’t enter the sweepstakes. Every contest has terms and conditions and this just so happens to be Sunset’s. It’s 2014 people, this shouldn’t be that big of a deal. Who knows, maybe purchasing your own collapsable hot tub will be less hassle than signing up for Twitter/Facebook for a chance to win it.

    November 26, 2014 at 8:34 am
  51. Geri

I agree – I do not ‘like’ commercial entities on Facebook and don’t use Twitter. The blurb said to go to THIS site for a chance to win…Sunset you get a thumbs down

    November 25, 2014 at 7:11 pm
  52. Harriett

Love your mag but will NOT like you on facebook, and I don’t do twitter. I’d like to enter the contest, but not enough to be bothered with either of those methods. Epic fail on your part.

    November 25, 2014 at 12:46 pm
  55. Marie Doyle

I have subscribed to Sunset for over 25 years……this contest is not up to your standards. Is this ideaa a brain wave of someone in her/his early 20’s?

    November 24, 2014 at 5:12 pm
  56. Cinnamon

Hope the Social Media Staff and Marketing crew are taking a pole on your readers dislike in using social media.

    November 24, 2014 at 3:10 pm
  57. Linda

So why can we not enter this giveaway some other way? I’m not feeling the Facebook/Twitter thing. Think, Sunset: what is the average age demographic of your customers — not the average age demographic of your staff and consultants. That should guide your analysis of whether/how to do this promotion. No point doing it if you alienate a portion of your subscribers. P.S. I want the portable hot tub.

    November 24, 2014 at 12:42 pm
  58. Carol Shih

    Hi all,

Information about the Facebook and Twitter giveaway will go up soon! We’re just about done finalizing all the details. Thanks for your patience, and I promise it’s well worth the wait. (And worth signing up for Facebook and Twitter.)

  60. sbp

Sunset subscriber. Am hurt by your social media entry only. What’s the point in subscribing and having all the information but the inability to enter such a lovely daily holiday contest. I use social media to keep up with friends and family, not to enter contests.
    Quite disappointed in Sunset.

    November 23, 2014 at 4:54 pm

  64. Linda

I want to “like” the comments above regarding not using social media. And I’m not going to apologize for not being into this social media trend, but I do want to enter!

    November 23, 2014 at 10:38 am
  65. Jill A. Beck

I agree, no facebook or twitter for me but looks like we must in order to get an answer to the question; how do we sign up for the give away holiday gifts without social media?

I agree – Shame On Sunset for forcing us to join Facebook to enter the sweeps!!!

    November 22, 2014 at 9:20 pm
  70. Toni

I agree. I hate being forced into using social media, it feels like discrimination against those of us who choose not to use it.

Why don’t you have a way to enter for the hot tub for the many readers like me that will not do social media?

Sunset this is not cool. If you are going to run a holiday giveaway like this we should not have to like u on Facebook in order to participate. SHAME on SUNSET!

Yep, I have Facebook, but I turned it off, I hate my e-mail flooded every single day. I just don’t have the time. Sunset this is not cool. Hmmmm underscored.
