While we’re eagerly awaiting our saffron’s arrival in the Sunset garden this week, you can learn more about the extra-special spice at Draeger’s Cooking School in San Mateo, CA. On Thursday, renowned Mediterranean chef Joyce Goldstein will share her secrets in a class titled “Holiday Cooking with Festive Saffron.” Joyce will preside over the pots and pans and demonstrate how to make several saffron-centered recipes. And of course you get to try them all, too!

The mouthwatering menu?

North African Meatballs with Saffron Sauce, Brodetto allo Zafferano (saffron fish soup from Le Marche on Italy’s eastern coast), Paella Valenciana with Chicken and Chorizo, and Saffron Lemon Pound Cake with Fall Fruit.

$65 per person; Thursday, Nov. 18, 6:30 p.m. Advance registration required at http://www.draegerscookingschool.com. 222 E Fourth Ave, San Mateo, CA; 800/642-9463 x 261
