One-block Diet wins James Beard Award
Our sun hats are off to Sunset bloggers Erika Ehmsen, Elizabeth Jardina, Rick LaFrentz, Amy Machnak, Johanna Silver, Margaret Sloan, and Margo True, recipients of the 2009 James Beard Award in the food blog category!
The project highlighted the satisfactions, surprises (and worries) of producing one’s own food. Our team raised hens, kept bees, made wine, grew food, feasted well, and showed how you can too.
Deemed “the Oscars of the food world,” by Time magazine, The James Beard Foundation Awards are the country’s most coveted honor for chefs; food and beverage professionals; broadcast media, journalists, and authors working on food; and restaurant architects and designers.
Will we be able to keep them down on the farm?

Amy, Heather, TigerintheKitchen, Chryss, and Jessie,
Thank you all very much for your kind words. We’re really enjoying seeing what we can (and can’t) produce on our little plot of land. As you know from reading, mostly we’ve been pleasantly surprised.
We’re pondering what sorts of backyard-food teams to launch next. Any ideas? What would you like to see us try? Use us as your guinea pigs for the food project you’ve been secretly wanting to start! We’re not afraid. At least, not yet…
Yea!!!! I’ve become addicted to your One Block Diet blog. I don’t know if I could go that local, but raising chickens and growing a back yard garden is something I definitely want to try once I own my own property. Raising bees sounds like fun too.
Congratulations!
Congratulations! Y’all are doing a great job…
Congratulations!! Very well-deserved indeed. I’m a complete failure at growing anything remotely edible so I’ve been living vicariously through your team. Cheers…
I thought the awards were tonight 5/4, what a spoiler! Congrats, though.
Congratulations! Well-deserved. I enjoy reading all of the One-Block posts.
